With affordability challenges, climate change-driven extreme weather, and growing electrification needs, Diablo Canyon is the safe and reliable backbone that keeps a $4.2 trillion economy running without interruptions for more than 4 million Californians every day.
Extending Diablo Canyon Operations to 2045 Will:
Lower monthly energy bills
An independent study by MIT, funded by the Clean Air Task Force, found that continued operations would save customers throughout California more than $20 billion, or more than $1.3 billion per year. California would be able to reduce its reliance on natural gas, use more in-state renewable energy sources, and delay expensive transmission upgrades.
If lawmakers don't pass a bill to extend operations, customers will pay $5.50 more per month on their electric bills.
Ensure clean energy progress while new green energy resources come online
Every year Diablo Canyon operates, it saves around 7 million tons of greenhouse gas from entering the atmosphere. That’s equal to taking 1.6 million cars off the road.
Maintain grid reliability with a stable zero-emission energy source
Diablo Canyon is “always on” energy, offering zero-emission energy 24/7, 365 days of power, rain or shine. If Diablo Canyon goes offline in 2030, it could result in more fossil fuel generation should wind and solar not be ready to fill the gap reversing our GHG emissions progress.
Continue the largest clean energy source that’s proven safe
Diablo Canyon generates nearly 20% of our carbon-free energy and has never had a safety event since opening in 1985. Last year, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission found the plant to be safe and environmentally sound to operate for an additional 20 years. Designed with state-of-the-art seismic supports, Diablo Canyon was built to withstand extreme natural disasters, including earthquakes, tsunamis, and flooding.
